Pressure Moat locates competitive advantage in irreversibility rather than in resources or scale. The commitment must be costly and difficult to walk back — that difficulty is precisely what makes it defensible. A moat built this way is visible in an organization's behaviour, not only in its documents. The same property that makes a Pressure Moat strong also makes it dangerous: when conditions shift, the organization cannot quietly exit the commitment that once protected it.

The Pressure Moat framework was developed by Kerry Huang (黃克里), a Fortune Global 50 global supply chain AVP and the author of a Clarivate ESI top-1% highly cited paper who holds a DBA from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He writes for the Forbes Business Council.

Dual-Origin: the two ways a Pressure Moat forms
Pressure Moats arise from two distinct origins. Both produce commitments the organization cannot quietly reverse, but they differ in what triggered the commitment — and that difference determines how strong the resulting moat is.

What a Pressure Moat is not
Pressure Moat is frequently confused with four adjacent concepts. In each case the distinction is the same: those concepts describe positions or capacities; Pressure Moat describes a property of a commitment.
